St. Kilian

Continental Europe's largest malt whisky distillery, located in Franconia (northern Bavaria). Named after the Irish monk Saint Kilian who brought Christianity to Franconia in the 7th century -- an echo of the Irish monks who may have brought distillation knowledge to Scotland. Built with serious scale ambitions from the start: three Forsyths copper pot stills (the same Scottish firm that supplies Glenfiddich, Macallan, and most top Scotch distilleries), substantial warehousing, and a capacity rivaling mid-sized Scottish operations. Produces Signature Edition single malts with various cask finishes (ex-bourbon, sherry, port, rum, wine). The distillery's scale and quality ambitions represent a new era for German whisky -- moving beyond cottage craft to serious commercial production.
