La Alazana

South America's most southerly whisky distillery, producing Patagonian single malt in the remote Welsh-Argentine community of Trevelin, Chubut Province. The Welsh connection is historically fitting -- Welsh settlers colonized this part of Patagonia in the 1860s, and La Alazana ('The Sorrel Mare') reconnects this Celtic diaspora to whisky-making traditions. Located at the edge of Los Alerces National Park, the distillery uses pristine glacial meltwater and barley grown in the Patagonian steppe. The extreme climate -- fierce winds, cold winters, dry conditions -- creates a unique maturation environment. Pablo Tognetti founded the distillery with a single small copper pot still, producing what may be the world's most geographically remote single malt. The whisky has distinctive mineral, herbal, and honey notes attributed to the terroir. A remarkable story of craft whisky at the ends of the earth.
